This weekend, June 17-19, the Motor City Irish Fest will open at its new home at Greenmead Historical Park in Livonia.
The Irish Fest was held on the Detroit Riverfront for many year, then moved to St. Valentine’s Church in Redford, but has now settled in Livonia.Co-Chairman Charlie French (The Irish Baker, source of the best Irish scones and soda bread) is excited about the new location, which provides much more room for Irish bands, dancers, vendors, games and – of course – a beer tent. “The City of Livonia has embraced us. They really want to be a part of this festival” said French.24 Irish bands will be performing, as well as some pipe and drum bands. The Opening Ceremony will feature the Metro Detroit Police & Fire Pipe & Drum Band. Co-Chairman Kevin Murphy (of Murphy’s Restaurant in Redford) explained that the Pub Tent will be constructed to represent the Tipperary Pub, a pub of long-standing tradition in Detroit (now closed), and will even offer Irish whiskey tasting. There will be Irish football games, and even a kilted magician will be on hand to entertain.Do not be surprised to find Livonia’s fine Irish judges – Hon. Kathleen McCann, Hon. Sean Kavanagh, and even Hon. James McCann (ret.) – on hand to enjoy some corned beef and cabbage.
