Dr. Mona – Hurley Medical Center, Flint Dr. Hanna-Attisha, We have read a lot about who is to blame for the crisis in Flint, but the comments by Dr. Hanna-Attisha Hurley Medical Center in Flint in Wednesday’s Free Press are the…

the first I’ve seen focusing on the extent of the impact on the children of Flint, and what can be done about it. Sadly, it appears that we are a long way from knowing the answers that we need. It breaks my heart to think of a child whose otherwise bright future has been compromised by the ingestion of lead. How many of those children might have grown up to be doctors or engineers, but have suffered developmental impacts that will limit them to much more mundane careers? And how many of those children who might have grown up as productive, middle class citizens will now be on public assistance for life due to the damage from lead ingestion? I know that Dr. Hanna-Attisha and many dedicated pediatricians will do their best to diagnose lead-induced issues, but none of them can turn back the clock and restore the future to those children. God weeps.~George S. Shea
